Established in 2008, SMS NAYBERS was created as a communication platform to link people living in the same geographical area. Your neighbours are often your first line of defence and by getting to know the people in your neighbourhood you will create a greater awareness of what is happening in your community. Should a crime take place the information can be instantly relayed to the members and the community quickly mobilised.
SMS NAYBERS sets up its members into groups in their own geographical areas, such as streets or suburbs. A Key Member of the Community (KMOC) can also initiate the development of a larger group/area. Once you are registered with SMS NAYBERS you are immediately linked to the people in your street, and sms messages sent to 33800 (SMS NAYBERS) will be received by everyone linked to you/your group.
There are no costs for registering on the SMS NAYBERS system or for receiving sms messages. Sponsors pay for any SMS NAYBERS text messages that you may receive. The sponsor companies have a TAG LINE, which is an advertising link at the end of the SMS messages. Please support your sponsors by clicking on the link. The cost of sending a message to your group is R1.50 (up to approximately 350 characters).
The SMS NAYBERS system is divided into three levels.
The first level groups together members in the same street. SMS messages sent by one member will automatically
be received by other members in the same street.
The second level is the KMOC group. KMOCs can select the members or streets who they want to make part of a larger group, such as a Neighbourhood Watch.
By creating a KMOC, SMS NAYBERS can link multiple streets into one group so that the KMOC's sms messages can be broadcast to all the people in the selected streets at the same time. (Members who are not KMOCs can only communicate with members in their own street).
As a KMOC you will need to put a * at the beginning of your messages if you want the message broadcast to all your groups. The * tells the SMS NAYBERS system that you want to send your message to all your groups. If the * is not present the SMS will only be broadcast to the members in your street.
The third level is a console that allows the SAPS to monitor communication within their policing area. If they know where suspicious activity is taking place they can use their resources more effectively. In this way, SMS NAYBERS becomes the eyes and ears for the SAPS.
You will see business adverts at the end of your sms messages. This is a TAG LINE. This Tag Line will come with a
link to a mobile website. We encourage you to click on the Tag Line and support the sponsor's business. Sponsors
can be local and/or national businesses.
CPFs and NHWs can get businesses to sponsor their messages thus making them free for the KMOC.
SMS NAYBERS will never give out your information to any third parties. The information that we receive from you will be kept strictly confidential. Your information is stored on our secure servers, which are monitored and regularly updated with the newest available security software.
At times certain people are still leaving refuse at the gate to the refuse area (in the car park). Please do not do this. Put the refuse in the bins. Ryan.
